Acceleration

Well, after we decided that we want to be done with the build.. lets say quite soon, things have upped pace and screws are being screwed in faster than ever before. Today we finished epoxying the bow transom. Nothing left there, bulkheadwise. Now we are turning our focus on the cabin area, which still needs 3 panels installed before it can be called complete. The two installed panels do yield satisfaction, though. First experiments with coating larger surfaces with epoxy have been done and it worked out very well, details in the video. A sponge-roller was used, with very little of the sponge part, since it sucks in epoxy and does not want to give it all out. Persuasive methods can be used, such as force. Hoping for gunwale stringers during the coming week! Photo evidence:

And continuing our new tradition of uploading videos – Uku making a large pancake (read: covering a panel with epoxy):

This just in: we’d like to thank James Jenkins for financial support, it is much appreciated. We could now replace some TORX screwdriver bits that were already hopelessly stripped and buy some more screws (as promised). Juggling coursework, work-work and boatwork is not always easy, but support takes us a long way. Stay tuned for more in the coming week!

Forward bulkhead progress

The bow structures are now ready to be epoxied to place. We’ve finished two of the knees, one between the two forwardmost bulkheads (pictured) and the other between the bow stem and the forward bulkhead (not pictured). We’ve also started working on the cabin structure, something that can and should be done bending the topmost gunwale stringers. It makes sense to build as much of the internal structure as possible before limiting access to the interior by stringers etc, but some things, such as the bench, will have to wait for the hull curve. In general I think we’re ready to epoxy all the bulkheads in place and push onwards to stringers. From there on it will be the internal structure, cabin structure and plywood planking.

News from the front

Hot news straight from the battle: the stalled front made a leap forward, as we today successfully installed our bow transom and the crash bulkhead. Furthermore, a tiller hole has been cut into the newly epoxied stern transom. Cabin side stringers have been installed and beveled. Top stringers still need work. The first cabin side panel has been test fitted. Here are the news in a vivid flash:

Here is a video of bending the above mentioned threaded U-rod for the transom. There is more video material, but for some reason we have been inert towards uploading it. May this be a bright start:

And also, adventures of Joosep in 3D land have been cemented into a page under “Work methods” under our “Details for the interested” section, found here.
